pea & ham soup

category: soup

This is one of those childhood classics that I ate growing up, even though my mum hated it. But what did she know? Pea and ham soup is the ultimate cozy, warming comfort food—salty, earthy, and deeply satisfying.

This is a great slow cooker meal, which means it’s easy but takes a few hours. The beauty of it is you can set it up in the morning before work, and by the time you get home, your house smells amazing and dinner is ready. It’s packed with veggies and flavour, and there’s something about that ham bone breaking down over hours that just makes everything taste better.

Technically this freezes well for meal prep, but in reality, it never lasts long enough to make it to the freezer.

Makes 6 serves

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Dried Split Peas
  • 1kg Ham Bone
  • 3 Carrots, diced
  • 1 Yellow Onion, diced
  • 2 Celery Stalks, diced
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 3 Cloves Garlic, minced
  • 6 Cups Chicken Stock

Method

  1. Put all the ingredients into the slow cooker and set on low for 6 hours
  2. Pull the ham bone out and pull the ham off the bone. Put the ham back into the slow cooker and cook for another hour.
  3. REmove the bay leaf and serve.
